Myofascial Pain

Myofascial Pain is the presence of trigger points (“knots”) or tender, dense, hyperirritable areas within the muscles. Trigger points can cause pain in the immediate area or can cause referred pain. For example pain from trigger points in the buttock muscles can be felt down into the legs. Trigger points can develop as a result of chronic stress to the tissues, poor posture and body mechanics, poor nutrition or sleep, or trauma. Trigger points also form in the spinal musculature secondary to disc or degenerative spinal pathology.
