Center for Pain Management in Indianapolis is always looking to expand our treatments to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients. That’s why we now offer mild®, a Medicare-covered outpatient procedure that helps alleviate lumbar spinal stenosis symptoms.
Our Indianapolis pain management team uses mild® for patients who have excessive ligament or bone growth in the spine caused by lumbar spinal stenosis. By removing the excess tissue, we can relieve pressure on the spinal nerves, which helps decrease pain and/or numbness and restore mobility.
Unlike traditional spinal surgery, mild® requires no overnight hospital stay, no general anesthesia, and no stitches (the incision site is about the size of a baby aspirin). After the application of a topical anesthetic, we use a small device to extract excess bone and ligament tissue through the incision. This procedure is usually complete in one hour or less, and patients are able to go home the same day with a small bandage over the incision.
Results from more than 30,000 mild® procedures nationwide have shown that most patients can resume normal activity within 24 hours and can increase their standing time and walking distance in the following days and weeks. This procedure has a low risk for the type of complications that can occur with traditional surgery, and the majority of patients report positive outcomes.
To get the most benefit from this procedure, we may recommend physical therapy as part of the recovery process. Our physical therapy team works individually with patients to help them build strength and flexibility, and we give patients the knowledge they need to exercise safely on their own.
